ABOUT
Dublin, capital of Ireland, was established in 841 A.D on the banks of the River Liffey. It was later settled by the Vikings in 917 A.D
From musical geniuses to literary legends, Dublin has produced an array of famous sons and daughters. In 1742 Handel’s “Messiah” was performed for the first time in Christ Church Cathedral.
In the musical field we have, Bono and U2, Bob Geldof, The Dubliners, The Chieftans and Sinead O’Connor.
In the field of literature comes William Butler Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, James Joyce and the creator of Dracula, Bram Stoker, to name but a few.
Irelands first University, Trinity College Dublin, was established in 1592. It has produced many world renowned scholars such as playwrights Oliver Goldsmith, Oscar Wilde and Samuel Beckett. The Old Library at Trinity also houses the famous Book of Kells.
Dublin is a warm and welcoming city. Its people who are friendly and engaging love the craic (fun). It is the hub of social activity in Europe with its diverse and fast paced nightlife.
It proudly boasts some of the finest Georgian Architecture in the world examples of which can be seen in “The Doors of Dublin”
Another fine example of fine architecture can be found in Leinster House which houses The Parliament of Ireland, known as The Dail.
Having a pint comes as second nature to a Dubliner and with the Guinness flowing from their Brewery at St. James Gate since 1759, it is no wonder.
Dublin is home to many great sporting arenas. From Croke Park, which is the Mecca of Gaelic Sports ( hurling and gaelic football), with a capacity of 86,000 people, to Lansdowne Road, home to the national Rugby and Soccer teams and has been the scene of many a nail biting contest.
Another of Dublin greats is golfer Padraig Harrington, who among his many accolades, was winner of back to back British Open Tournaments in 2007 and 2008 and was the US PGA Champion of 2008.
